Sylmar Biotech Health & Engineering Magnet (SBHEM)
English Language Development (ELD) Program
Our ELD Program is designed to empower English Learners (ELs) with the language skills needed for academic success and active participation in the SBHEM community. We support our EL students at every stage, from Newcomers to Long-Term English Learners (LTELs), ensuring they have access to high-quality education, career preparation, and inclusive opportunities.
What we offer:
- Structured ELD Classes: Specialized English classes tailored to students' language levels.
- Inclusive Education: A full-inclusion model that integrates ELs across all academic programs.
- Newcomers: Students new to the U.S. educational system with minimal English proficiency.
- Long-Term English Learners (LTELs): Students who have been in U.S. schools for six or more years that still require ELD support.
SBHEM prioritizes reclassifying English Learners to Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) status. To qualify for reclassification, students must meet the following criteria:
- English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPAC): Score of Level 4 (Well-Developed) in all domains (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing).
- Teacher Evaluation: Must have a C or higher in their ELD or English Class.
- Parental Consultation: Meetings with parents or guardians to review reclassification eligibility.
- Standardized Test Scores: Approaching grade level or higher in the iReady diagnostic or the SBAC.
Achieving RFEP status means they will no longer be classified as English Learners.
