Purpose of Magnet Programs
LAUSD Magnet programs were established in 1977 as a voluntary integration initiative to address school segregation. The goal was to offer students high-quality instruction and a challenging curriculum that promotes academic success for all. All students, including English learners, students with disabilities, and gifted/talented students, are encouraged to apply.
Currently, there are 292 Magnet programs located throughout the district, providing theme-based educational opportunities for grades K-12. Sylmar Biotech Health & Engineering Magnet is a 9th-12th grade magnet school with a special focus on biotechnology, health, and engineering.
